A Bluetooth flaw allows most Apple devices to be Tracked

A Bluetooth flaw allows most Apple devices to be Tracked

A flaw was just discovered in bluetooth that would allow a bad actor to track a wide range of devices. These devices include  iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches.  Other devices are any laptops running windows 10 and fitbit wearables. However Andriod devices are not at risk.

A reported by TNW, Boston University researchers, Johannes K. Becker and David Starobinski,  discovered the vulnerability.

Researchers from Boston University (BU) have discovered a flaw in the Bluetooth communication protocol that could expose most devices to third-party tracking and leak identifiable data […]

The vulnerability allows an attacker to passively track a device by exploiting a flaw in the way Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is implemented to extract identifying tokens like the device type or other identifiable data from a manufacturer […]

To make pairing between two devices easy, BLE uses public non-encrypted advertising channels to announce their presence to other nearby devices. The protocol originally attracted privacy concerns for broadcasting permanent Bluetooth MAC addresses of devices — a unique 48-bit identifier — on these channels.

However, BLE tried to solve the problem by letting device manufacturers use a periodically changing, randomized address instead of their permanent Media Access Control (MAC) address.

The vulnerability discovered by BU researchers exploits this secondary random MAC address to successfully track a device. The researchers said the “identifying tokens” present in advertising messages are also unique to a device and remain static for long enough to be used as secondary identifiers besides the MAC address.”

Basically, it is possible to link the current address to the next one and therefore identify as the same device. This allows someone to be able to track the device indefinitely. However only at the short range of bluetooth signals.

The researches  have propsed a solution.

To protect devices from address-carryover attacks, the researchers suggest device implementations should synchronize payload changes with MAC address randomizations.

With Bluetooth device adoption growing at a massive scale, they caution that “establishing tracking-resistant methods, especially on unencrypted communication channels, is of paramount importance.”

They didn’t explain if Apple would even be able to fix this vulnerability and implement this change in an over the air update. However in the meantime there is a simple workaround.

“Switching Bluetooth off and on in the System Settings (or in the Menu Bar on macOS) will randomize the address and change the payload.”

Apple gives a peak at the new emojis coming to iPhone this fall

Apple gives a peak at the new emojis coming to iPhone this fall

Today was world Emoji day so to celebrate Apple releases a  sneak peak to the collection of emojis coming this fall. The newest designs aim to bring more diversity as well as more fun emojis to categories like food, animals, activities and smiley faces.

One of the major updates came to the holding hands emoji. This emoji typically represents couples and relationships now with the update their will be over 75 combinations since you can customize the gender and any combination of skin tone.

Based on Apples proposal to the Unicode Consortium last year to introduce more disability themed emojis this release will include a hearing aid, a  guide dog,  wheelchairs a prosthetic arm and a prosthetic leg. These new emojis will accomplish the diversity that Apple is pushing for.

Many emoji categories are getting new updates by adding a new smiley face for yawning, a one-piece swimsuit, new food items including a waffle, falafel, butter and garlic, and new animals like the sloth, flamingo, orangutan and skunk.

In total, there will be 59 new emoji designs in the fall. These will be added with a free software update to iphones, ipads, Mac, and apple watches. New emojis are created by being approved by Unicode 12.0.

Apple could release at least two new iPads this year, including a cheaper version of the iPad mini. According to Bloomberg, there was no new version of iPad mini since 2015. The other upcoming iPad reportedly has a 10-inch screen with a faster processor and might be released as soon as this spring. That device would keep its Lightning port like it used to do for the past few years.

Bloomberg also reports that Apple is considering to release an upgraded new iPad Pro for spring 2020. And they would introduce a laser-powered 3D camera to Apple devices. It also seems to be focusing on the new iPad for the next version of iOS, iOS 13. This version might include iPad-specific updates. For instance, a new home screen and tabbed apps, as well as improvements to file management.

Earlier this week, programmer Steven Troughton-Smith uncovered references to four new iPad models in the iOS 12.2 code. He expected that one of them might be a mini.

MacRumors also spotted Eurasian Economic Commission Database registrations for seven new iPads. Apple most recently announced its new iPad Pro with Face ID at an event in Brooklyn, New York this past October. It also includes gesture controls like the ones used on newer iPhones, although it sounds like for this next generation of iPad, Apple might debut features on the tablets.

Siri Gets Much Smarter as Apple’s Investments Pay Off

Siri Gets Much Smarter as Apple’s Investments Pay Off

Apple’s digital assistant, Siri just vaulted past Alexa and Cortana in an 800-question test.

Over the recent few years, voice-controlled digital assistants, like Siri, have popular in our everyday life. For more examples there are Amazon’s Alexa, Alphabet’s Google Assistant, and Microsoft’s Cortana inhabit all kind of electronic devices.

When Siri got back in 2010, this digital darling was revolutionary, but other companies started to follow this new sensation. Plus, Apple didn’t move fast to adapt the artificial intelligence (AI) that powered its digital assistant. On the other hand, competitors invested aggressively and gained acceleration from the beginning.

Over the past couple of years, however, Apple has been working to restore Siri to her former glory. New data released by Loup Ventures shows that Siri is quickly gaining ground.

A comprehensive exam

Longtime Apple follower Gene Munster and fellow analyst Will Thompson set out to test the performance of the digital assistants. These are four of the most widely used smart speakers: Amazon Echo (Alexa), Google Home (Google Assistant), HomePod (Siri), and the Invoke (Cortana) by Harman Kardon, a division of Samsung Electronics.

The process of the test was asking a series of 800 questions to each. They observed how the digital assistants answered the questions which held in five categories.

  • Local: Where is the nearest coffee shop?
  • Commerce: Can you order me more paper towels?
  • Navigation: How do I get to uptown on the bus?
  • Information: Who do the Twins play tonight?
  • Command: Remind me to call Steve at 2 p.m. today.

Dramatic improvement

Siri took second place, and this was just right behind Google Assistant. Also, the report revealed that Siri’s score improved by more than 22 points — more than any other competitor. Siri answered 74.6% of questions correctly, and it is an improvement from the 52.3% tested in February 2018.

The report cites HomePod’s tight integration with Siri on the iPhone and its ability to access email, calendar, and messaging as contributing to its victory in that category. It took second place in three of the remaining four categories, but came in last in the Information segment.

Those investments are paying off

Earlier this year, Apple hired John Giannandrea to let him take the lead its recently reorganized AI, machine learning, and Siri teams.  Also, Giannandrea had got promotion to the  executive team, as senior vice president of machine learning and artificial intelligence strategy.

Apple has long been behind in the AI field, because the company primarily had rigid stance on user privacy. AI uses  large data sets but at the same time, involves transferring user data to the cloud. Apple has been trying to develop alternative ways. For instance, they can process data at the device level, which keeps user data more secure by keeping it out of the cloud.

Slightly bent iPad Pro, but Apple says it’s normal

Slightly bent iPad Pro, but Apple says it’s normal

Apple said the bend didn’t lower the iPad Pro’s performances.

iPad Pro
iPad Pro / Apple

Apple has confirmed that some of 2018 iPad Pros have a very slight bend in the aluminum chassis. But according to the company, this is just a side effect of the device’s manufacturing process. So it doesn’t negatively affect the iPad’s performance. In brief, Apple does not consider it to be a defect. The bend has occurred from a cooling process involving the iPad Pro’s metal and plastic components during manufacturing. Both sizes of the new iPad Pro can exhibit this condition.

Some customers have claimed on their social media that their iPad Pros developed a small bend without any abnormal mistreatment. They believed it happened gradually in everyday use — or after transporting the iPad Pro in a backpack. And other were insistent that their iPad Pro came that way out of the box. Apple is now saying that in some cases, the latter is true.

This situation happens more commonly on the LTE model, as there’s a plastic strip that breaks up the iPad’s flat aluminum sides.

It’s where the antenna line divides two parts of metal, and some users have noticed a bend. Although some owners of the Wi-Fi model also claim to have this situation, but many are straight as designed. Somebody may consider this as a minor problem — not even a problem. But actually perceived issue matters for Apple, beacuse it has been known for its reputation in manufacturing devices.

The customers who had a trouble with bent iPad Pros should be able to get exchange or return their iPad Pro at the Apple Store or other retailers within the 14-day return window. But it’s not clear if swaps will be possible outside that policy. Some employees said there is AppleCare for this kind of situation. However, this system isn’t for just a slight bend which came with initially.

BUT APPLE SAYS THAT CONCERNS OVER THE IPAD PRO’S STRUCTURAL RIGIDITY ARE UNFOUNDED

That confidence shows us that this is not going to be a “bendgate” controversy again. In 2014, there was a similar problem with iPhone 6 Plus. So its next iPhone switched over to a sturdier aluminum. But then, Apple had some trouble dealing with that, eventually launching a repair program. So at this time, Apple might know that trying to assure consumers is important, telling the fuss is over nothing.

What Could be Apple’s Next Smash Hit?

What Could be Apple’s Next Smash Hit?

Former iPhone engineer Ken Kocienda, developer of the on-screen keyboard on the original iPhone and the autocorrect feature, figures Apple’s next big hit will probably surround AR, or augmented reality. AR allows its users to see information overlying on their surroundings via their smartphones or other devices; this technology is used in Nintendo’s popular mobile game “Pokemon Go.”

“You can take your phone and you could point its camera at something in the world,” said Kocienda. According to Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Apple‘s move into augmented reality could boost iPhone and App Store sales. This could result in as much as $8 billion in revenue for Apple. Last quarter, Apple reported $3.74 billion in revenue from its “other products” division, which includes sales of Apple Watches, iPods and home products.

Apple’s Next Big Event

Apple’s Next Big Event

Well, it’s about that time of year again for Apple’s event, where we’re all excited to find out about the latest version of Apple’s hottest product – top being the iPhone. On September 12th, we’ll hear about the redesigned version of last year’s iPhone X, new Apple Watch, and upcoming software.

iPhones: First up, the iPhone XS is an updated version of last year’s iPhone X,  having the same size 5.8-inch screen, but with improved internal specs, such as the other -S class updates Apple has had in the past. Next, the iPhone XS Max, also rumored as the iPhone XS Plus, is a larger, 6.5-inch version of the XS that offers a bigger screen and larger battery. Both XS phones will have the same features as last year’s X, with the new changes coming internally. There is, however, the chance that Apple will have some new feature for the XS models as previous -S class updates. Lastly, the new iPhone is said to be a cheaper, 6.1 inch version of the iPhone X/XS, and would still offer the bezel-less display and Face ID. Instead, it would possibly cut some of the X and XS phone’s more premium features like the OLED screen, stainless steel frame, and possibly the 3D Touch system.

Watch:  It has been rumored that Apple will be offering a bigger display on the new Series 4 Watch for a nearly edge-to-edge design, along with a slimmer size than the previous versions since it had been introduced in 2015. Similar to last year’s Series 3, the new version will also have LTE capability, with a more subtle red ring on the digital crown to indicate the cellular status. The new version will come with watchOS 5, which adds automatic workout detection, a walkie-talkie mode, and better notifications.

Software: Although we’re all looking forward to seeing Apple’s latest products at this year’s event, we will also likely to be getting some final release dates for iOS 12, watchOS 5, tvOS, and possibly macOS Mojave. New features to be seen this year include Screen Time for tracking your time spent on your phone, better notifications, and a new custom emoji called “Memoji”.

We all know anything can happen at an Apple event, so we’re ready for some surprises too!

Buzz About New IPad Pro Models Coming Out This Year

Buzz About New IPad Pro Models Coming Out This Year

https://www.iphoned.nl/nieuws/ios-12-ipad-pro-face-id/

Apple is releasing new models for the iPad pro. Although the release date is not official, Apple is telling everyone to stay tuned!

Apple has been very busy in 2018 due to their launch of a new education-focused iPad and new Macbook Pro that includes Touchbar models. Apple has plenty more products in store for the future, however, Apple users may have to wait for the production process to keep progressing in order to give us all the answers. Adding onto the latest version of the iPhones coming out in the Fall, Apple will have variations including a pair of new iPad Pros that will launch with new features and upgrades.

Physical Features And Upgrades To Design

The iPad has had a very consistent look to it and that will continue to be the case. Apple will keep the 10.5-inch iPad Pro. The company, however, expects to grant the iPad Pro an iPhone X-like look which will include some new aspects to its design. Apple also says that they will reduce bezel sizes on both the 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro variants. However, this will mean different things for the different variations of these models.

According to Ming Chi Kuo, Apple will still have the 10.5-inch iPad Pro and remain the same physical size, but include a screen that is extended in nature. This will mean that consumers will receive an  added screen real estate in the same form factor. According to Kuo, this 10.5-inch model will eventually progress to becoming an 11-inch model due to the reduced bezel sizes.

Moreover, Kuo says that the amount of bezel sizes will reduce in regards to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro but will not increase the display size. The 12.9-inch display will then remain the same way, however, the overall footprint of the device will decrease. This will make it not only more portable, but also very easy to manage.
